How do you care for the lawnmower blenny?

Peaceful to most fish; chases other blennies and similar shapes.

Feeding

Herbivore.

Starves in clean new tanks; supplement with nori. Several sources advise adding only to tanks about a year old.

Tank and special needs

Plan for at least 114 litres of water (the care sheet says 30 US gallons).

Mature tank with algae; lid recommended.

Why this care level

Hardy but often bought to clean a new tank and starves.

Corals and invertebrates

Hungry fish may pick at clam mantles, LPS and SPS (several sources).

Which tankmates suit the lawnmower blenny?

One per tank; avoid other blennies.

Suggested order in a mixed tank: add after the first peaceful fish.

More than one lawnmower blenny

Keep one lawnmower blenny: two of the same species usually fight.

Other fish

Checked against the other 59 fish in this guide, assuming a tank big enough for both. Individual fish differ, so treat this as a starting point.

These checks follow the reasons fish and invertebrates clash: same species or genus, similar shape, mouth size, temperament, food, burrows, tank size and the order they are added. Individual animals differ; every source agrees on that.

Quarantine and health

Feed nori in quarantine.

New fish are the most common way disease gets into a reef tank. Quarantine every fish in a separate tank before it joins the display, and choose a method that suits its tolerance of copper.

Captive-bred or wild?

Wild-caught.

Minimum tank
  • 30 US gallons from several retailers.
  • 45 to 55 US gallons for one fish and 100 for a pair in care guides; 251 to 500 litres in a UK showcase.
The limit is the algae supply and the age of the tank (about a year), not the volume.
